ESX presents a new high-end woofer series with the VISION VXP Subs, for which a great deal of effort was already invested during the design phase. Key components such as the aluminum basket, voice coil, and diaphragm were completely redesigned to uncompromisingly achieve the development goal: high-end subwoofers with a shallow mounting depth. Mission accomplished—virtually nothing is “off the shelf,” as 12 additional components besides the diaphragm were specially re-tooled. The effort invested in the independent die-cast aluminum basket with an integrated magnet system and the uniquely shaped honeycomb diaphragm is particularly noteworthy.

Equipped with generously sized voice coils measuring 50 mm in diameter in the 8-inch model and an even larger 65 mm in the 10-inch model, the subwoofers can handle an extremely high power rating of 300 or 400 watts RMS, respectively. These high figures are also due to the use of a special 32 mm long CCAW coil mounted on an extremely lightweight fiberglass former. Thanks to the low mass and the powerful dual magnet system, an additional 2 dB of efficiency was achieved.

Shallow woofers have the disadvantage that conventional cone diaphragms cannot be used due to their design, simply because there is insufficient mounting depth. This leaves only shallow diaphragms as an option. However, these are highly prone to distortion if they consist of only a single layer. ESX solves this problem with the extremely stable construction of the multi-layer VXP diaphragms, which are reinforced with fiberglass on both outer surfaces and feature an additional rigid honeycomb structure on the inside. Both woofers perform best in small, sealed enclosures.
